So you finally decided on a Tablet, congratulations! Now that you've made this decision, it's time to choose again, which one to buy!?
Ok, so now apart from the iPad there is a whole range of options to choose from, WHAT´S IT TO ME!?
Well, first things first, how much do you want to spend? Fact is there are many options, and they all have something good to offer, what will make the real difference is how much you´re willing to pay, so let's break it down into 3 categories.
A. $ 200 to $ 400
The baseline, the minimum possible. There are very good options in this category! But first, just to clarify, there are cheaper options, but the quality is so bad that they´re really not worth mentioning. Now, in this category you will find the Kindle Fire, Blackberry Playbook, the B & N Nook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and others. What they all have in common? Small screen!
All these tablets have about 7 inches in screen size, all are touch and all have WiFi. The difference here is going to be the operating system and vendor support. If you have a Blackberry and seek an extension of your phone, then the Playbook can be a good option. You can check your mails and use your BBM on a bigger screen. But note that the library of Apps is very limited, and if you stop using your phone, you can not have email on your tablet.
Then there are those that run on Android, enter the Galaxy Tab and Dell Streak! These tablets will give you free access to the Android Apps store, one that grows and grows every day. With them you can read books, listen to music, watch movies, have video chats and more! A very good choice for its price.
Also in this category, two new competitors have emerged that are able to differentiate themselves from the rest: Kindle Fire and B & N Nook. Both have a 7 inch screen, no camera or microphone and no video output. What makes them special? The support. Both have a huge library of books, movies, music and TV shows at your disposal. It is up to each of you to choose between this two, but something perhaps slightly tips the balance is the Amazon Prime service. For a fee of $ 80 per year, this service allows you to view a huge amount of movies online, receive a free book each month, have access to thousands of songs, receive an App for free every day and also be able to store all this in the Internet with unlimited space. Amazon Prime makes the Fire go from simple little tool into a powerful multimedia engine. Both the Fire and the Nook cost $ 200, less than the price of many smart phones!
B. $ 400 to $ 600
In this category the champion comes into play, the heavyweight, the invincible: iPad 2. Mind you, I say iPad 2 because since it was released, the original iPad became obsolete. Apple gives you a high quality product, a huge app store where you will surely find whatever you seek. This tablet has a beautiful 9.7-inch screen, metal finishing and 2 cameras, one in front for video chatting and a regular rear one. Undoubtedly, if you're willing to pay $500 for 16 GB of space, this is the best option. Android improves every day it´s operating system and user interface, but still has a long way to go to catch up with Apple, the ease of use of the IOS is unmatched.
I should mention that in this category we also find the Motorola Xoom and Samsung 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab. Both run Android and are very similar to their counterparts in 7 inches. But again, if you're willing to spend $ 500 or more on a tablet, buy an iPad.
C. Over $ 600
The only tablet in this category worth mentioning is the same iPad 2, but with a 32 GB and 64 GB hard drive. These options apply to people who want to have dozens of movies stored at once, something that I think makes no sense for a tablet, and could be replaced by an online movie service like Netflix. Or you could buy a keyboard and use it as a laptop, but as I explained in my previous post, it just does not have enough power to become your primary tool.
So far Apple and Android seem to dominate the market in terms of the operating system. But keep your eyes open, Microsoft is releasing Windows 8 the following year, both for PC, I mean Laptops! and Tablets. If they achieve the same level of acceptance the´ve had on phones with Windows Phone 7, they may be able to reach a good market share and give us a true alternative for these products.
Sincerely, JoseQ
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do you plan to buy a tablet this year? What will you choose? Leave your answer in a comment!
